Fog season road safety: what road crews, transporters and factories need

How to keep road crews, drivers and factory gates safe in Punjab's winter fog: reflective jackets, LED batons, cones, road studs and reflective tape.

By H.S Traders, safety equipment importer in Lahore since 1998 · Published · 4 min read

Key takeaways

  • In thick fog, drivers see light and reflection long before they see people or objects.
  • Road crews need reflective jackets with sleeves and LED batons, not just a vest.
  • Mark site entrances, turns and barriers with cones, reflective tape and road studs before the season starts.
  • Stock up in November. Demand for fog items jumps in December and good stock runs short.

Every winter, from late November to January, fog across Punjab cuts visibility on the motorways, the GT Road and city roads to a few metres. Most fog accidents happen because a driver sees a worker, a parked truck or a barrier too late. The fix is simple: make everything that matters shine or glow, and warn drivers earlier.

1. Road crews and traffic staff

A normal vest is not enough in thick fog. Give anyone working on or near a road:

  • A reflective jacket with sleeves. Moving arms with reflective tape are easier to spot than a still vest.
  • An LED traffic baton. A moving red or orange light is the first thing a driver sees in fog.
  • A safety helmet with reflective strips, so the head is visible above vehicles.

2. Give drivers more warning

In fog, drivers need warning much further back than usual. For road works, breakdown points and site entrances on main roads:

  • Place traffic cones in a long taper, starting well before the work area.
  • Use cones with reflective collars, and add LED warning lights on the first few.
  • Use water-filled barriers where a vehicle could enter the work zone.

3. Factory gates, warehouses and housing societies

Trucks turning into a gate in fog are a common cause of accidents. Before the season starts:

  • Put reflective tape on gates, barrier arms, pillars and loading dock edges.
  • Fit road studs along the entrance road and at turns, so drivers can follow the edge.
  • Install a convex mirror at blind exits.
  • Give gate guards a reflective jacket and an LED baton.

4. Transporters and fleets

For trucks, buses and delivery vans, add reflective tape to the back and sides of every vehicle and keep a reflective triangle or a few cones in each one. A broken-down truck on a foggy road with no warning is one of the most dangerous situations on Pakistani roads.

5. Buy early

Demand for reflective jackets, batons and cones rises sharply in December. Ordering in November means you get the full quantity, in time for the first fog.

How can a factory make its gate safer in fog?

Put reflective tape on the gate, barrier arm and walls, fit road studs along the entrance, place cones at the turn-in, and give the guard a reflective jacket and LED baton.
