Which safety gloves for which job: a simple guide for Pakistani workplaces

Cotton, coated, cut-resistant, leather, rubber or electrical? A plain guide to choosing work gloves for factories, sites, workshops and warehouses in Pakistan.

By H.S Traders, safety equipment importer in Lahore since 1998 · Published · 4 min read

Key takeaways

  • There is no one glove for every job. Buy by the task.
  • Coated gloves suit most general handling. Cut-resistant gloves are for sharp edges and glass.
  • Leather gloves are for welding and heavy work. Rubber or nitrile gloves are for chemicals and wet work.
  • Electricians need special insulating gloves. Ordinary gloves give no protection from current.

Hand injuries are among the most common injuries in Pakistani factories and workshops, and the wrong glove is often part of the reason. A thick leather glove is clumsy on an assembly line, and a cotton glove is useless against chemicals. Here is how to match the glove to the job.

Cotton and coated gloves

Plain cotton gloves keep hands clean and protect against light scrapes. Add a rubber or nitrile coating on the palm and you get much better grip and longer life. Coated gloves are the everyday glove for most sites and warehouses.

Cut-resistant gloves

These are made from very strong yarn that blades and sharp edges struggle to cut through. Use them in metal fabrication, glass handling, and anywhere workers handle sharp castings or cut materials. They protect against cuts, not stabs from points or needles.

Leather gloves

Leather handles heat, sparks and rough materials. Use long-cuff leather gloves for welding and short leather gloves for steel bars, bricks and heavy lifting.

Rubber and nitrile gloves

For acids, dyes, cleaning chemicals, oil and wet work, use long rubber or nitrile gloves that cover the wrist. Check them for holes before each use.

Electrical gloves

Only special insulating gloves protect against electric current. Tell us the voltage your electricians work on and we will suggest the right pair. Store them away from sun and sharp tools, and check for damage before each use.

Buying tips

  • Order a range of sizes. Loose gloves get caught, tight gloves get taken off.
  • Replace coated gloves often. They are cheap, and worn gloves lose grip.
  • Never let workers wear gloves near spinning drills or lathes, where a glove can be pulled in.
