Best masks for Lahore smog: N95, KN95, FFP2 and surgical compared

Which masks actually filter Lahore's winter smog: N95, KN95 and FFP2 compared with surgical and cloth masks, how to fit them, and what employers should stock.

Key takeaways

  • Smog is mainly fine particles (PM2.5). Only well-fitted N95, KN95 or FFP2 masks filter them reliably.
  • Cloth and surgical masks leak around the edges and give little protection against smog.
  • Fit matters as much as the rating: pinch the nose clip and check for gaps.
  • Employers should stock N95 or FFP2 masks for outdoor staff from late October to January.

Every winter, Lahore and much of Punjab sit under thick smog. In recent seasons Lahore's air quality index has repeatedly crossed hazardous levels, with readings above 400 reported by Dawn and spikes above 1,000 reported by Geo News. Staying indoors on the worst days helps, but people still have to commute and work. A good mask is the simplest protection.

What is in smog, and why it matters for masks

The most harmful part of smog is PM2.5: particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres, from vehicle exhaust, crop burning, brick kilns and industry. They are small enough to pass deep into the lungs. A mask works against smog only if its filter catches particles this small and it seals well enough that air does not simply go around the edges.

Masks compared

MaskFilters PM2.5?SealVerdict for smog
N95 (US rating)Yes, at least 95% of fine particlesGood, head strapsBest choice
FFP2 (European rating)Yes, similar to N95GoodBest choice
KN95 (Chinese rating)Yes, similar on paperOften ear loops, looserGood if it fits well
Surgical maskPartlyLoose, gaps at sidesLittle protection
Cloth maskPoorlyLooseNot effective

Quality varies, especially with cheap unbranded KN95 masks sold in markets. Buy from a supplier who can tell you the rating and the maker.

How to wear it properly

  1. Place the mask over your nose and under your chin.
  2. Pull the straps over your head, one at the crown and one at the neck. Ear loops are easier but seal less well.
  3. Press the metal nose clip with both hands to mould it to your nose.
  4. Breathe out sharply. If you feel air escaping at the edges, adjust it.

Beards and stubble stop a tight seal, so protection drops for bearded wearers.

Valved or not?

Masks with an exhalation valve are easier to breathe through and protect the wearer just as well. The valve lets your exhaled breath out unfiltered, so valved masks are not suitable in hospitals or where you need to protect others. For smog on the street or at work, either is fine.

How long does a mask last?

Disposable N95 and FFP2 masks are meant for one day or one shift. Replace them sooner if they get wet, dirty, damaged or harder to breathe through. Do not wash them; it damages the filter.

For employers: who needs masks in smog season?

Staff who work outdoors through the day face the heaviest exposure: security guards, traffic and parking staff, delivery riders, drivers, construction workers and market staff. Stocking N95 or FFP2 masks from late October to January is a low-cost step, and the same masks protect against dust on construction and factory sites the rest of the year. Buy by the box, and keep a few sizes if available.

Who should take extra care

Children, older people, pregnant women and anyone with asthma, heart or lung conditions are most affected by smog. Most N95 masks are not designed for small children. People with breathing or heart problems should ask their doctor before wearing a tight-fitting mask for long periods. On the worst days, follow government advice and stay indoors where possible.

Frequently asked questions

Do N95 masks work against Lahore smog?

Yes. A well-fitted N95 or FFP2 mask filters at least 95% of fine particles, including the PM2.5 that makes smog harmful. Fit matters: pinch the nose clip and check for gaps.

Is a surgical mask enough for smog?

No. Surgical masks are loose at the sides, so most air leaks around them. They give little protection against fine smog particles.

How long can I use one N95 mask?

Disposable N95 masks are meant for one day or one shift. Replace them sooner if they are wet, dirty, damaged or hard to breathe through.
