Key takeaways
- A standard hard hat suits most construction and factory work. Electricians need a helmet with no air vents.
- Ratchet adjustment is worth it for workers who wear a helmet all day. Push-button is fine for visitors.
- Use colours to show roles on site, for example white for supervisors and yellow for workers.
- Replace a helmet after any heavy hit, or when the plastic cracks or fades.
A safety helmet protects the head from falling objects and knocks. It is usually the first item on any site safety list in Pakistan, and also the one workers complain about most if it is uncomfortable. This guide covers the few things that actually matter when you buy helmets for a site, factory or warehouse.
1. Pick the type by the job
| Job | Helmet to buy |
|---|---|
| Construction sites, steel and cement plants | Standard hard hat, vented for summer |
| Electricians, WAPDA and line staff | Hard hat without air vents, made for electrical work |
| Grinding, cutting, brush cutting | Hard hat with a clear face visor attached |
| Warehouses, vehicle workshops | Bump cap, a light cap that protects against knocks |
| Visitors and short site visits | Basic hard hat with push-button adjustment |
A bump cap is not a hard hat. Use it only where nothing can fall from above.
2. Vented or not vented
Vented helmets have small openings on top that let heat out. From May to September this makes a real difference, and workers are less likely to take the helmet off. The only places to avoid vents are electrical work and jobs with hot splashes, such as welding or foundry work.
3. Ratchet or push-button adjustment
A ratchet has a small knob at the back. Turn it to tighten, and the helmet stays firm all day. It costs a little more but suits anyone wearing a helmet for a full shift.
Push-button (pin-lock) adjustment is cheaper and lighter. It is fine for visitors, supervisors on short rounds and spare helmets at the gate.
4. Colours by role
There is no fixed national rule in Pakistan, so each company picks its own colours. A common setup:
| Colour | Usually worn by |
|---|---|
| White | Engineers, managers, supervisors |
| Yellow | General workers |
| Blue | Electricians and technicians |
| Red | Fire wardens and emergency staff |
| Green | Safety officers |
| Orange | Visitors and road crews |
Tell every new worker your colour scheme on their first day so it actually gets used. Company logo printing is a cheap way to stop helmets walking off site.
5. Fit and comfort
- Order a few helmets with a sweatband. In summer they stop sweat running into the eyes.
- Add a chin strap for work at height or in wind, so the helmet does not fall off when someone bends over.
- Keep spares at the gate for visitors and for workers who forget theirs.
6. When to replace a helmet
- Straight away after any heavy hit, even if you cannot see damage.
- If the shell is cracked, dented, chalky or badly faded.
- If the inside straps are torn or the clips are broken.
Strong sun weakens plastic over time. Do not leave helmets on car dashboards or in open site stores, and do not paint them.

How long does a safety helmet last?
Usually a few years with normal use, but replace it straight away after a heavy hit, or if the shell is cracked, chalky or badly faded.
