Key takeaways
- An ABC dry powder extinguisher covers most fires in homes, shops, offices and factories.
- Use CO2 for electrical panels, generators and server rooms because it leaves no residue.
- A 6 kg ABC unit is the usual size for commercial premises; 1 or 2 kg suits cars and kitchens.
- Check the pressure gauge monthly, service yearly and refill after any use.
A fire extinguisher only helps if it is the right type, in the right place, and still charged. Many units in Pakistani shops and offices fail one of those three. This guide explains which extinguisher to buy and how to keep it ready.
Know the fire classes
Extinguishers are labelled by the fires they can fight. Pakistan mostly uses the European letters:
| Class | What burns | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| A | Ordinary solids | Paper, wood, cloth, cotton, plastics |
| B | Flammable liquids | Petrol, diesel, paint, thinners |
| C | Flammable gases | LPG, natural gas |
| Electrical | Live equipment | Panels, wiring, generators, UPS |
| F | Cooking oil and fat | Kitchens, restaurants |
The main types and where to use them
ABC dry powder
The most common extinguisher in Pakistan, and for good reason. It handles Class A, B and C fires and is generally rated for electrical equipment too. Use it for homes, shops, offices, warehouses, factories and vehicles. The downside is the mess: the powder spreads widely and can damage electronics and machinery, so clean up promptly after use.
CO2 (carbon dioxide)
Best for electrical fires and flammable liquids. It leaves no residue, so it is the right choice next to electrical panels, generators, server rooms, UPS and battery rooms, and in labs. It is less effective on burning paper or wood, and it should not be used in small closed spaces where people stay inside.
Foam
Works on Class A and B fires. Common at fuel stations and in some factories where flammable liquids are stored.
Fire blanket
The simplest tool for a small kitchen fire, such as a burning pan of oil, or for wrapping a person whose clothes have caught fire. Every kitchen should have one. Never use water on burning oil.
What size to buy
| Place | Typical choice |
|---|---|
| Car, rickshaw, motorbike shop | 1 kg or 2 kg ABC powder |
| Home | 2 kg ABC powder near the kitchen and a fire blanket |
| Shop, office, clinic | 6 kg ABC powder on each floor, 2 kg CO2 near the electrical panel |
| Factory, warehouse | 6 kg or 9 kg ABC powder spread through the floor, CO2 at panels and generators |
| Generator or server room | 5 kg CO2 |
| Restaurant kitchen | Fire blanket plus a unit rated for cooking oil fires |
How many do you need, and where?
The number depends on floor area, layout and the fire risk. Building approvals and fire inspections refer to the Building Code of Pakistan (Fire Safety Provisions 2016) and local rules, so check with your building authority or Rescue 1122 for larger premises. Practical rules that apply almost everywhere:
- At least one extinguisher on every floor, near exits and stairs, so people move towards safety to collect it.
- Extra units next to kitchens, generators, fuel stores, electrical panels and welding areas.
- Mounted on a wall bracket or in a cabinet at around one metre high, clearly visible and never blocked by stock.
- A sign above each one so it can be found in smoke.
Keeping extinguishers ready
- Monthly: check the pressure gauge needle is in the green, the safety pin and seal are in place, and the hose is not cracked.
- Yearly: have it serviced by a competent technician and tag it with the date.
- After any use: refill it, even if only a short burst was used. A part-used extinguisher loses pressure.
- Periodically: cylinders need a pressure test after a set number of years. Your servicing company will tell you when.
CO2 extinguishers usually have no gauge, so they are checked by weight during servicing.
Train people to use it: PASS
Pull the pin. Aim at the base of the fire. Squeeze the handle. Sweep side to side. Only fight a small fire with a clear exit behind you. If the fire is spreading, get everyone out and call Rescue 1122.

Frequently asked questions
Which fire extinguisher is best for a home in Pakistan?
A 2 kg ABC dry powder extinguisher kept near the kitchen, plus a fire blanket for oil fires. Larger homes should have one on each floor.
Can I use an ABC extinguisher on electrical fires?
ABC powder is generally rated for electrical equipment, but CO2 is better for panels, generators and electronics because it leaves no residue.
How often should fire extinguishers be refilled?
After any use, and whenever the gauge falls out of the green. Have every unit serviced yearly by a competent technician.
